Ngramology: Two Types of Terms Conveying Manhood

In this post I showed that the usage of terms conveying manhood has been increasing for the past ten years. There are a couple of important exceptions, though, whose popularity has followed the same pattern as has feminism.

Macho:

Machismo:

Men never used to refer to themselves as macho. The term was invented to caricature and condemn manliness as crude, stupid, domineering, and violent. Its decline is good news.
